There have been many within the legal fraternity who have been highly critical of this appointment, most notably Tony Fitzgerald, who after a private meeting with Jeff Seeney on Monday has not changed his opinion on the matter.
Justice Carmody was promoted to the chief justice position despite never having sat on the Supreme Court, and after only nine months in the chief magistrate's job. Many believe he is too close to the LNP and threatens the independence of the judiciary.
To highlight how insulated they are from public sentiment and the interests of the judiciary, they have ensured that Carmody was sworn in at a private ceremony, the first time this has happened since 1917.
Retired Supreme Court justice Jim Thomas said chief justices were normally welcomed in public, with congratulations and speeches that lauded their professional achievements. "Obviously a conscious decision was made not to run the risk of having a large ceremony, and a series of speeches that might end up being embarrassing as well as the spectacle of hardly anybody turning up. There's nothing more worrying than a huge court and nobody there."
Campbell Newman and Jarrod Bleijie were not in attendance at the swearing in
Scott Morrison is an incompetent Immigration minister who hides his ineptitude with a wall of secrecy. He has tapped into a rich vein of Xenophobia, but the support he does has for his harsh policies are based on two insecure foundations - on the lack of information provided to Australians, and on the lack of repercussions (so far) for his actions.
Australia doesn't (and never will) exist in a vacuum despite Morrison's best efforts. More facts will emerge over time and they will reflect badly on Morrison.
The High Court has already put a stop to Morrison's madness. And the UN is also keeping a close eye on proceedings.
And it has already forced Morrison to reveal that the asylum seekers are being held at sea. And it has extracted an undertaking from him that they will not be handed back to Sri Lanka without at least 3 days notice.
Abbott remains defiant - not even suicides among detainees will force him to reconsider the policy. He is likely equally unmoved by the mental health issues facing children in detention.
When in opposition Joe Hockey argued passionately for the protection of children and the humanising of refugees. Things have changed now he is in government (see the video below)... where he is largely silent about greater injustices which are occurring under the government he is a part of. Few people would support his double standards... probably as many as support his out of touch budget.
'As the women of Australia do the ironing...' they will realise that Tony Abbott isn't the only one in the Coalition with antiquated attitudes towards women.
Murray-Darling MP John Williams is also a dinosaur.
At a meeting was in April, where the NSW National Party was conducting upper house preselection Williams was heard to say to Robyn Parker, the then NSW Minister for the Environment, that he would “tear her a new orifice” and to say that she had never had a real man.
Former (retired) Liberal Senator Sue Boyce said that she has never encountered anything like the kinds of comments made to Parker and she is surprised Williams wasn’t disendorsed immediately.
Forget immediately, he still hasn't been disendorsed.
No one would try to maintain that George Christensen is particularly - intelligent, classy or well informed. But he is a representative of people who are, so he does have a duty to try to represent them. His views are clearly out of touch given his recent tirade about climate change.
Christensen is quoted as saying 'The weather and climate in Australia has not changed in the last century'. Wrong - of the 13 years since 2001, they are all among the 14 hottest years on record.
Curious George, demonstrated his lack of class and his bizarre sense of humour by suggesting that 'climate alarmists' will tell you climate change will lead to - a zombie apocalypse, cannibalism, a prostitute shortage in Bulgaria and the death of the Loch Ness monster. Not funny, and not addressing the factual errors in his assertions.
George, in making his assertions has admitted that - he was not a scientist or climatologist but was a fan of the television series Star Trek. Excellent credentials for supporting any policy put forward by the Mad Monk.
Sadly Christensen is not alone... the Coalition is full of space cadets like George... all of whom are out of touch with the majority sentiment on climate change action Tony Dumb Dumb himself says (and possibly believes - honesty isn't a strong point for him) that other nations are winding back their emissions trading schemes - Wrong. But then he's not a tech head - the difference between winding back and ramping up is a difficult concept for the Mad Monk.
On climate change policy, Tony Dumb Dumb is even out of touch with senior UK Tories. Now that's an achievement!
